What Happens at a Functional (Developmental) Vision Exam
A functional or developmental vision evaluation goes beyond the eye chart. It looks at how well the eyes work together and process information. Exact tests vary by doctor. Commonly included:
- Visual acuity, distance and near, plus eye health
- Refraction (glasses prescription), sometimes with dilating or cycloplegic drops
- Eye alignment and near point of convergence
- Focusing (accommodation) range, flexibility, and stamina
- Eye movement / tracking tests
- Sometimes visual-perceptual or visual-motor tests
How to prepare
- Bring a list of symptoms and when they happen (our checklist summary helps)
- Bring current glasses and any school reports
- Ask how long the visit takes; these can be longer than a routine exam
