Vision Problem or ADHD? Understanding the Overlap
"Can't focus on homework" can have many causes. Some binocular vision problems, like convergence insufficiency, produce symptoms that overlap with inattention: losing place, trouble concentrating on reading, avoiding near work. A 2005 chart review from a university pediatric eye center reported that CI and ADHD were diagnosed together more often than expected. The authors stressed this may be an association, not cause and effect.
A useful clue
Notice whether attention problems are mostly with reading and close work or show up across all activities, settings, and listening tasks. Patterns limited to visual near work are worth raising with an eye doctor.
What we recommend
- A comprehensive eye exam including binocular vision and focusing tests
- ADHD evaluation through your pediatrician or a psychologist if concerns are broader
- Don't stop or skip any treatment based on this site
Children can have both. Getting vision checked thoroughly helps the whole care team.
